I’m a Baltimore girl...... but I LOVE Philly.
My love affair began fall 2000 when I was entering freshman at Temple University.
In many ways the city reminds me of Baltimore but there’s still something very different. I don’t know if it’s because I met my first love there or the fact that it was my first time away from home but there’s something special about the city. From cheese steaks at Ishkabibbles, to breakfast at Sabrinas and wandering around the Philadelphia Museum of Art, I just can't stay out of the city.
So for my Fun, Fearless & Free at 33 BIRTHDAY, I was feeling a bit nostalgic and decided to take a quick road trip up 95 N to 76 W to Philadelphia.
First Stop….El Vez
Years ago I stumbled upon the trendiest little Mexican restaurant off of S 13th Street in Market East . I fell in love at first sip :). El Vez has the best margaritas ever and you can order by the glass or the pitcher. For my birthday lunch, I was sipping pretty on the Pink Cadillac and highly recommend you try it too. Now, I don’t recommend you go driving no pink Cadillac or whatever car you have afterwards because it is highly potent and you will be done done. Ok so I’m a little bit of a light weight but seriously those margaritas are strong…….good but strong.
Oh and the guacamole is amazing and so is the open-faced shrimp quesadilla. In honor of my birthday, I even received a free dessert....churros con chocolate. I'm not a huge dessert fan, especially chocolate but it was yummy!
After our lunch date at El Vez, we were a bit tipsy so headed back to our hotel for a nap ,lol. I've stayed in the Ritz Carlton a few times during my overnight Philly stays but decided to try something a little different for my birthday stay and went with Hotel Monaco. Hotel Monaco was an amazing choice. Upon our arrival we were greeted by valet and his first question was would we like some wine? HELL YEAH! Even though we were tipsy from El Vez, it was my birthday so decided to just go for it. After check-in, we headed to the room, where I found the cutest welcome note and two bottles of Pinot Nior. The room was eclectic chic and inside of the closet were two bath robes...one was leopard print. Now if you know anything about me you know that leopard is my favorite color. Yes, I love it so much I have made it apart of the color family.
After relaxing in the room for a bit, we headed up to the 11th floor for drinks at the rooftop lounge, Stratus. Super sexy atmosphere and very low key. This would definitely be a great spot when it gets a bit warmer out as it was still a little to chilly to head out on the patio to catch a view of the city. We didn't stay too long but I was able to have my last birthday drink for the evening, a French Martini.
The next morning we had breakfast at one of my FAVORITE spots, Sabrina's Cafe. Sabrina's is sooo good and is also vegan/vegetarian friendly. There are multiple locations throughout the city but my favorite location is Christian St. The Christian Street is small and cozy and has tons of charm.
I absolutely can not go to Philly without eating at Sabrina's and if you haven't been, I highly recommend you go. I usually order the Bella Vista Omelet with Challah French Toast. Be prepared for a wait if you go on the weekend.
My last stop for my birthday trip was a visit to my alma mater. Unfortunately, the first day of spring but snow instead of sunshine and I wasn't able to walk around the campus like I would have liked to. I did have the opportunity to stop in the Student Center and grab a Temple shirt for a prospective student. Fingers crossed she decides to go!
