CHARM CITY PRETTY

A single girl's guide to the city. Giving you the Best of Baltimore through Food, Fashion & Fun...

Pretty in Puerto Rico

This July, Charm City Pretty escaped the Best of Baltimore and headed to the Caribbean for a little family fun in Puerto Rico! Puerto Rico, nicknamed the “island of enchantment,” has a Caribbean flair mixed with a little Miami flavor! It’s a no-passport-needed getaway perfect for family fun, boo trip and of course the single girls!

Bacardi Rum Tour

Cost: FREE

Can I have a rum and coke please?

The first stop on our family fun vacation was the Bacardi Rum Factory in sunny San Juan….don’t judge us! If you’re looking for some booze and something to do, check out the Bacardi Rum tour which offers a tram ride on the grounds of the distillery, one hour guided tour of the plant with company history and culminating bartending presentation on how to make mojitos and Cuba Libre.

Now you’re not going to chocolate wasted on the tour as they only offer two free tickets per person for mixed drinks (6oz cup size and not too much Bacardi) but you can shop pretty at the gift shop which offers various rum flavors with prices considerably cheaper than your neighborhood liquor store. I picked up the Mango Infusion for the Fab Pad (my condo) and have been sipping pretty on my summer concoction “Mango Main Squeeze” (see recipe) Cheers!

Bio Bay Kayaking Tour

Cost: $45

The bio bay kayaking tour promises a “magical experience” with mysterious blue-green light in the water created by micro-organisms which thrive in that environment .From the picture it looks pretty magical indeed, but that was not quite the Charm City Pretty experience…

The tour which must be done and night to capture the luminescence proved to be quite a challenge for an amateur kayaker. We were literally bumper cars in water through a canal for an hour trek out to the open waters and an hour back. Once out into the open water, the tour guide had us stick our hand and/or paddle in the water and from there you can see a faint glimpse of what looks like a green

highlighter. Smacked in the face by a few tree branches, soaking wet clothes, dirty salty water taste in mouth, sore arms and green highlighter water pretty much sums it up! But it was an experience !

Old San Juan

Cost: Transportation

It’s definitely worth a trip to Old San Juan for a day of food, shopping and culture. For the day, we rented a family van for guided tour of the city and then drop off for lunch and then off to explore. Old San Juan is full of shops so don’t forget to bring some cash.

Vieques Beach

Cost: $75 per person (chartered boat)

Vieques Beach is absolutely beautiful! With white sand and hidden coves and is recommended must go while in Puerto Rico! The island can only be reached by water so the family chartered a boat for a day of relaxation and snorkeling with the fish. Check out my jump into the Caribbean from the bridge of the boat and our captain for the day. Thinking about Puerto Rico your next vacation stop, check out Things to do in Puerto Rico for more activities and share with Charm City your favorite summer vacation spot.
